Herman Webster Mudgett Herman Webster Mudgett was a serial kill from 1886 to 1894. He is allegedly responsible for hundreds of murders. He is most know for the killings that he did in his Chicago hotel that he opened during the 1893 World’s Fair. Many say that he was the first extreme serial killer in the United States of America. He was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. His mom’s name was Theodate Page Price and his dad’s name was Levi Horton Mudgett. His dad was strict on punishments, and he was bullied a lot as a kid. Herman said when interviewed that when he was younger other kids forced him to touch a human skeleton. When they heard that he was afraid of going to the doctor’s office. He then bought the lot across the street and build his three story block long hotel that people called â€Å"the castle†. The first floor of the castle contained his pharmacy, a jeweler, and various other shops. The other two floors contained his personal office and a maze of over one hundred windowless rooms with doorways that would lead nowhere, doors that could only be opened from the outside, and other labyrinth like structures. He would change builder frequently, so no one would fully understand what the building really was and report it to the police. He would kill a selected female employs for life insurance policy. He would also kill lovers and some of his hotel guests. He would lock some in soundproof bedrooms fitted with gas lines to asphyxiate them at any time. He would also lock some of his victims in huge bank vault near his office, so he could listen to them scream, panicked and eventually suffocate, because of the vault being soundproof. The questions mainly asked are if systems engineers perform general works or whether they specialize in specific tasks. The question of whether system engineering is the overall process of managing a project or a life cycle of roles such as program verification and validation. The system designer fine tunes the design and also describes in detail the needs of the other lower subsystems. And finally he confirms if the subsystems can meet the specifications available or if it is possible to develop them. Mainly the role of system engineers at this stage will be to focus on the architecture, high level design, integration and verification of the subsystem. The lower level development of the subsystem will be the role of the system designer (Matty1997). The system design role comes after the requirement engineer has come up with the requirements and the functional structure. The two tasks work together in the selection of the subsystems and the explanation of the subsystem requirements. System analysis role   System analysts (subsystem engineers) at this stage try to confirm if the system designed meets the system requirements stated. The things to be analyzed will be system throughput and output, memory usage, and the system response. The work of the system engineer is to model the complex parts of the system to investigate if they are able to work well and interface them with the outside world. Modeling will also assist the system engineers to understand the operations of the system. The system engineers carry out such modeling with various powerful simulation tools. The type of project will determine the extent of analysis to be carried out with complex and risky projects requiring higher levels of analysis. Validation and verification role So as to ensure that the developed system meets the stated requirements, validation and verification engineers develop a verification program and sometimes the system engineers also come up with the test plans and procedures and determine what’s supposed to happen during an event. Verification and validation engineers are responsible for answering such questions and should also be able to predict behaviour of the events in advance. Verification and Validation engineers are also able to fully understand the system design so that they are able to respond to any anomalies that may occur and incases of emergencies are aware of the experts to call (Fisher1992). The role of the verifications and validations depends on the organizational structure; in some organizations a system test group performs these roles while in others the roles are performed by both a group of system engineers and the system test group. Logistics and Operations (LO) Role. System engineers at this face will demonstrate to the customer of how the system will operate. They are also asked questions by the customers regarding the operation of the system, and will also settle any anomalies that will arise. Logistics engineers are to aid the design and development stage by bringing maintenance and logistics concerns to these stages (Roger1985). Rays personality isnt easy to interpret considering he doesnt change a lot throughout the novel. T. Ray demonstrates anger, abuse, and a little bit of caring. In the beginning of the novel, T. Ray was very rude and sometimes had an abusive way of speaking, sometimes acting. He cursed and yelled at everything she did. To state another example, you wake me up again, Lily, and Ill get out the Martha Whites, you hear me? (pg. 5). He would us vulgar language towards Lily, for example, you act no better than a slut, (pg. ). Lilys passion was reading and writing, but T. Ray refused to allow her to pursue it (pg. 15,16). He would punish Lily and force her to kneel on grits, which was known as Martha Whites (pg 24). Towards the middle, T. Ray still hasnt chanced too much. Although, he hasnt been so aggressive with his actions, just words. Lily left T. Ray and called him collect to tell him she was all right, but he was mad that she made a collect call. He doesnt care that Lilys getting older, hes still strict with her. You tell me where you are right now, do you hear me? (pg. 159). He doesnt know anything about her. He ignores Lilys question when she asked, I was just wondering, do you know what my favorite color is? (pg. 160). I believe at this time T. Ray cares, but he has trouble confessing it and expresses his feelings by anger. By the end of the novel, T. Ray cleaned up a lot more than how he acted in the beginning. He cleaned up physically and emotionally, but it doesnt mean he stopped being mean. Hes expressing how much he cares, still out of anger, but a little more promising. The way he begins to worry when Lily mentions who has the pin he gave Lilys mother. You tell me right now how did this August women get it? pg 292). He started to breakdown and say things like, I looked for her everywhere I could think. And she was right here. Jesus Christ, she was right here. (pg 293). I think he began to realize how lonely he is without either Lily or his wife and it gets him more angry. T. Ray didnt change a whole lot, but as the chapters went on he expressed his feelings in an aggressive manner that showed a little heart in different ways. He laid off the abusive actions towards the end, but never gave up those hurtful words with such caring questions. The best thing he did for Lily was to let her live with August.
